HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR SPRAY TAN APPOINTMENT
COMPLETE ALL OTHER BEAUTY APPOINTMENTS 24 HOURS PRIOR
Appointments such as manicures, pedicures, hair, facials, hair removal (wax/sugar), and massages should be taken care of at least 24 hours prior to your spray tan appointment. Having these done too close before your appointment will leave a barrier, causing an uneven tan and having them done right after is a sure way to remove your beautiful tan in patches.
shower + Exfoliate + shave 24 hours prior
Showering too soon prior to a spray tan can lead to uneven absorption of the spray tan solution. Avoid DOVE products or any cream based cleansers, as they are known to leave residue behind that cause tans to develop streaky.
Exfoliating is very important. Focus on rough patches like your elbows, knees, hands, ankles and use an oil-free scrub. Exfoliating mitts (which can be purchased in the studio or on the website) are also highly recommended.
avoid any topical products
Lotions, perfume, deodorant, make up, sunscreen, anything that can be applied will leave barrier on your skin. Ingredients in deodorant in particular can cause your spray tan to leave a green tint.
wear loose, dark clothes
Wearing tight fitting clothes can cause friction and rub off your developing tan. Avoid yoga pants, jeans, socks and bras if possible. I highly recommend arriving in dark sweats and slippers. Either arrive in them or bring it with you to change into directly at the end of your appointment and wear it until you’re ready to rinse off the solution.
arrive on time
Spray tans a generally a short service and every precious minute counts. 10 minutes doesn’t sound like much but if you’re 10 minutes late to a 15 minute service, it can’t be done. Arrive on time to your appointments so we can get you bronzed and ready!
AFTER CARE
AVOID GETTING WET
Water will stop the DHA from developing properly. Avoid washing hands, doing dishes, rain, liquid make up, lotion, anything that can potentially splash water onto your skin prior to your initial rinse.
No Working Out for 24 hours
Avoid sweating for the first 24 hours following your spray tan.
No touching
Keep your hands off yourself! The spray tan can transfer onto the palms of your hands causing a very unnatural look. Avoid crossing your legs and arms.
Moisturize
Use an oil and mineral free moisturizer at least 2x a day. Moisturized skin holds onto spray tans better!
SHOWERING
When you are ready for your initial rinse, its best to just use your hands to rinse off the solution with no soap and to keep the shower as short as possible. Avoid hot showers! Luke warm is the way to go. Ideally, no hair washing on that first day to avoid shampoo.
The following showers should be done an oil-free, gentle body wash that won’t strip the tan. When you’re done showering, use a towel to PAT dry, not rub.
Avoid exfoliating
Don’t exfoliate until you’re ready to say goodbye to your tan. Remember, you want to be as gentle as possible to make the tan last.
other tips
To preserve your tan, avoid swimming, long showers, baths, steam rooms, and saunas.
Always use SPF! There is no such thing as a base tan. Spray tans do NOT provide any sun protection.
Avoid harsh chemicals such as chlorine, products containing acids, massages, fashion tape, bandages, and anything else that may strip your tan.
The tan on your face will generally fade quicker so I recommend using the Face Tan Water to retouch. This can be purchased on the website or in the studio.
WHAT IS NORMAL
During your initial rinse, you’ll notice brown water washing off. Don’t fret! It’s just the bronzer. Your tan will continue to develop over the next 24 hours.
If you get an Express Spray Tan, you’ll still look untanned right after your initial rinse. An express tan means you can rinse off the solution sooner. It doesn’t mean that it develops quicker. You’ll still have to wait the full 24 hours for the tan to develop.
On average, a spray tan can last anywhere from 7-12 days. The better you take care of it, the longer it lasts. Keep that skin moisturized!
WHAT IS NOT NORMAL
Patches of skin that didn’t take on the tan. Medication and skin conditions should be brought to my attention prior to our appointment as they can cause the spray tan to not work they way it’s supposed to.
